That definitely isn't what is happening in many areas. My mother put her house on the market in June 2006. It was under contract 3 different times, each deal fell through due to buyer financing problems. It finally sold the 4th time in March 2007. Along the way, the price got lowered a few times. Fortunately, she didn't need the sale proceeds to cover her living expenses in her new home (a senior apartment complex). If she had, she would have been in big trouble. Or if she would have needed to get out of the house for financial reasons, she could have ended up in foreclosure if she couldn't carry the mortgage for 9 more months.
