Default Why does credit report ask me about loans i never had

How come when i look at my free credit report (i think this one was transunion), it asks me that i may have had a loan taken out at certain banks, then gives me a list of the banks it could have been at, and i am supposed to choose which one. I of course choose none of the above because i have never even taken out a loan. Is this a common occurrence with free credit reports? My equifax report does not show this.

I also was speaking with capital one, and they were asking me these same questions with multiple choice possible answers (when i was okaying my card because they thought fraud had been committed on it), only it was for a home loan in 99 (when i was still in highschool)!

I have the same thing, since I'm only 25 and have never had a loan... I think it's just extra security to keep someone from stealing your identity, but maybe someone with more knowledge than me can respond.

yes, i am thinking the same thing. The only thing that throws me is that it asks me in a way that it is saying I really took out a loan. I also wonder why my credit card would told me the same thing (only it was for a different year) but the questions were phrased the same (multiple choice with a none of the above option)

yes, it is just a security feature. I have always had those questions every time i've ever checked my credit - I have had loans (mortgage & car) so they typically draw from those, but my husband (who never had loans) shows bogus loans so we always have to choose "none of the above" for him. Its just to make sure you are who you are.
