Chicago Tribune news: Splitting retirement funds can help diversify tax risk
Article talks about tax diversification of retirement accounts. 401k Roth IRA taxable accounts I saw no mention of annuities dividends (directly speaking...)

Roth IRA
Mutual Funds ETFs Bonds No 401K There be my buckets! |
|

- Co. pension of $1500/mo
- Social Security of $2400/mo - 401k - Roth IRA - Taxable investments - Cash balance plan at new ER I'm really only banking on the Roth/401k. Everything else is in "their" hands. |

We've got a pretty crowded basket.
Me: Deductible tradtional IRA Non-deductible traditional IRA Rollover IRA from previous job Roth IRA Taxable mutual funds and individual stocks (joint with wife) Cash accounts/bonds/CDs/etc. Wife: Deductible traditional IRA Non-deductible traditional IRA Rollover IRA from previous job Roth IRA 403b (which we'll probably rollover in the IRA) Of course, there may also be Social Security if it is still around (which I'm thinking it will be in some reduced form)

Not so many buckets
Gov't pension Deferred Compensation Plan Roth IRA Taxable Investment Acct. Savings |
|
|||
|
Current buckets include: TSP (husband), rollover iras (both of us) and roth iras (both of us).
If my husband stays in the Army the full 20 yrs, we should get a monthly retirement check when he completes that. Plus, social security, if any. We should have paid for house way before then. |

Roth IRAs (DH and me)
Social security - maybe??? -DH just started a career teaching, so he should have a good retirement plan through whatever school he ends up at -Very small pension through DH's former job (was there just over 5 years) -If I continue working for the state, I will buy into their pension plan - as it looks now, though, I (hopefully) won't be there long enough to be vested. I wish I knew everyone's ages...feels like we are behind looking at everyone else's lists, but we are also only 29. We've got a long time... |

I am 34, wife is 32 (will be 33 soon).
The number of buckets is less important than the amount in the buckets. If you have 2X as much as me saved, who cares that I have more buckets?

I only have a Roth IRA. I will become eligible for a 401(k) at work in about 5 months. I've never had one available to me before. I started investing just over a year ago, and everything's been going towards my Roth.
