Exclamation Student Loan Consolidation

I have a few private student loans with variable rates. I was wondering if anyone knew of a place which would consolidate all of my loans with a fixed rate? One of my loan holders said that they are going to offer a fixed rate in either the spring/summer. Does anyone else know of a company which has fixed rate private loan consolidations?

I had issues finding companies which would touch "private" student loans which were not stafford, perkins or other type of loans.

Wellsfargo, I think, was willing to do so (but cost did not appear right to me). I chose to keep loans seperate and pay down quickly.

This was ~10 years ago.

So far every place I've seen that will touch private student loans is all variable, and I want no part of that. Hopefully the loan company I talked to today has their's available soon.

I handled that issue with a home equity loan. If you have that option available to you, that might be your best bet.

Don't have a home yet ... I'm hoping that next summer(2008) we will be able to get one.

Can one consolidate student loans even while he or she is still in school and they're deferred, or does one have to wait until he or she graduates? If possible, I would like to start looking at making a few payments to keep the principle down. Is this a smart thing to do if I have no other debts?
