I was never in debt, except for a mortgage until I find myself in a Divorce situation where my ex spouse has run up a very considerable credit card debt on a co-applicant account where we are both responsible for
this debt according to the credit card company. She proceeded to max it out to the tune of 14,000 from app. the 2000 when you were together. And, the credit card company says you can not do a darn thing about it. And, yeah you can request that she be liable for the debt if she will sign a form (ha ha!), but even so she must be credit worthy to assume the debt. In other words the credit card company wants their money and just to bad for you you sucker! I'm looking for any advice on this situation...

Close the account. Pay it off and keep records for everything. Maintain your credit and dignity.
Hire a great lawyer and get it back. The money I mean. best of luck to you.

Usually in a law suit, the only person that gets any money is an attorney. I agree with Jim, close the account and make the payments. Try to get her to pay you some of the money directly.

I agree also with Jim and Ima. If she won't pay, however, secure a judgment against her present/future earnings so you can be repaid. This means going to court. There are young attorneys out there who won't charge you an arm or a leg because they need exposure, and there are legal clinics. Some people have gone to Lawyers.com and got good advice.
Good luck! |
