Survey- how old are you, and do you think you'll depend on SS?

I am 34, and plan to use SS as my bar money when I hit 67. Unless there is an early benefit I can take sooner.

I am 26 and I will be shocked if SS is still around. If it is, it will be extra income, but I will not count on it.

I am 46 and kinda hope someone figures out a way to make it work. I don't count on it though and certainly not as my primary source of income.

I'm sure something will be in place (I'm 30) but who knows what it will be, and how much I'll get. I'm not counting on it, that's for sure!

Did you do any of these calculations:

1) how much you put in?
2) how long it will take to get same amount "out"?
3) take payments as early as possible
4) take payments as late as possible?

Yes, I know how much I paid in. I will get it all back this first year. I never made over $8000 dollars a year. Of course, my employee matched it, so it will take 2 years to get my money and theirs back.
I am taking it early because I plan to save it all. Plus, all of my relatives died early. ( I have not had any living blood relatives for over 12 years.) My parents and my sister died young.

I'm 28 and doubt that it will be around when I am eligible to start taking it. If it is it will simply be bonus money, and I am not counting on it in any way. I wish that I could opt out of the program and invest the money to my own liking. I could get a 8 to 10% return on it as opposed to the small return the government gets.

I'll do you one better. The government can keep what I've put in already, never need to give it back, provided it does not take another penny. I don't need to invest it and the 3.5% raise would be nice.

I'm 42. I am doing all of my retirement planning not including SS benefits. That way, no matter what happens, we'll be covered. Realistically, however, I fully expect SS to still exist in some form, but significantly reduced from what it is now. So whatever we get from SS will be a bonus to what we've put away on our own.

I don't plan for it but I do think it will be there, in some form, probably greatly reduced.

The age of attainment may be 72 or something, which I think may be fair for all considerations to society.

I doubt they could fully phase it out and return to the days where being elderly meant being impoverished. There would be just too much public outcry.

I think it is terrible that you all have to pay out so much and I will get my money back the first year. That being said, my husband has to pay in over 15% every year because he is self employed.
