Survey- how old are you, and do you think you'll depend on SS? I am 34, and plan to use SS as my bar money when I hit 67. Unless there is an early benefit I can take sooner.

i'm 29, and i'll be shocked if my parents get SS

I am 46 and kinda hope someone figures out a way to make it work. I don't count on it though and certainly not as my primary source of income.

I'm sure something will be in place (I'm 30) but who knows what it will be, and how much I'll get. I'm not counting on it, that's for sure!

I just got my first check last month. I am saving every dime I get, so I will have something to live on when I really get old. I am certainly not there yet!!

1) how much you put in? 2) how long it will take to get same amount "out"? 3) take payments as early as possible 4) take payments as late as possible?

Yes, I know how much I paid in. I will get it all back this first year. I never made over $8000 dollars a year. Of course, my employee matched it, so it will take 2 years to get my money and theirs back.
I am taking it early because I plan to save it all. Plus, all of my relatives died early. ( I have not had any living blood relatives for over 12 years.) My parents and my sister died young. |

you know what i'd love? give me the option to put my SS contributions into a roth instead, and manage it myself....
wait, what was that about loans to the government?... |

I'm 42. I am doing all of my retirement planning not including SS benefits. That way, no matter what happens, we'll be covered. Realistically, however, I fully expect SS to still exist in some form, but significantly reduced from what it is now. So whatever we get from SS will be a bonus to what we've put away on our own.

I will be working tell I die thanks to all the money I am dishing out now for my animals LOL!!! Sorry still in shock at todays vet bill!!!
Well I hope I can work as long as possible & I am starting IRA's & hopefully when the house is paid off I will be saving alot more. |

I don't plan for it but I do think it will be there, in some form, probably greatly reduced.
The age of attainment may be 72 or something, which I think may be fair for all considerations to society. I doubt they could fully phase it out and return to the days where being elderly meant being impoverished. There would be just too much public outcry. |

I think it is terrible that you all have to pay out so much and I will get my money back the first year. That being said, my husband has to pay in over 15% every year because he is self employed.
