doing taxes online?
Sorry if this sounds pathetic, but I've never actually done my own taxes, always paid someone to do them. I'm trying to cut back on costs this year and I've heard that there are online forms and such that you can do rather painlessly. I've googled around for info on this, but it all just looks like one ad after another, so I thought I'd come here for a man-on-the-street perspective.
So: anyone done them online with software, etc.? If so, how did that work for you -- better than paying someone?

Re: doing taxes online?
I highly recommend doing your taxes online. I've always been a pen-and-paper filer until this year when I used Turbo Tax. I'm hooked.

Re: doing taxes online?
I've been using H&R Block's TaxCut Online to eFile my taxes for the last 4 years, and it's very easy and painless. You can use this link for a free Federal eFile with TaxCut Basic without any age or income qualifications (normally it's $9.95) http://www.hrblock.com/taxes/partner...PartnerId=1692

Re: doing taxes online?
here's the link to the IRS' free file page...
http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html
if your AGI is $52,000 or less you can file online for free.
if not, it's not expensive at all to do it online in most cases (Turbo Tax like Sweeps uses for instance)
like Safari I've always used TaxCut from H&R Block, works great. had to give them up this year though, they couldn't accommodate my HSA so I wound up using TaxAct instead.

Re: doing taxes online?
Used Turbo Tax for the 6th consecutive year and I think it's great. My federal and state returns were accepted two days after submitting them and the refund was deposited in my bank account within 10 days of acceptance.

Re: doing taxes online?
I used Turbotax. Previously I had done it online and loved it but this year with multiple state income/withdraw, mortgage and everything we broke down and bought the software so I could take my old sweet time dinking around with numbers.

Re: doing taxes online?
I heard Turbotax had problems on Mac computers, I don't know. Anyway, I used Taxbrain and it was smooth sailing. I didn't have to use it, but it was good knowing that if something went wrong they had live customer support. My 2 cents.

Turbo tax for at least 6-7 years and loving it. I might have used it for last 10 years... I don't even know what paper forms look like anymore.
