I have 2 that I use and pay off monthly
1 Discover that earns cashback (5% gasoline, 1% everything else)
1 Mastercard that earns 4% rebates on gas purchases

I have a couple of store cards that give me rebates for using them, but I don't use them very often.

7 Ouch -- how could you keep all that straight?

2 here; Both rewards cards that I pay off in full at the end of the month.

number of accounts or number of cards?

I have 4 CC I share with my wife. Most have a zero balance month to month... if we travel, we usually put the trip on a CC and pay it when we return. Plus my Amex from my company.
I have a Circuit City account with zero balance
I have a best buy account with zero balance

We may have a store account at a few more places.

I have no credit cards at all. I use my debit card to pay for just about everything. I also recently discovered that if I run it as a credit card I still get some of the protection rights as with a standard cc. I did run into a few problems when I first gave up my cc's. I used a few payday loans from this site, nationalpayday.com, to get me through that. Still, getting those put a fire under my ass to pay off my loans IMMEDIATELY, and not begin that slide into debt. I have since gotten myself under a good budget/savings plan and am happily debt free.

I am surprised everyone has so few cards
maybe it has changed but in the early 90s they would send you applications for cards,if you just never sent them back they would just send you a card
I have 9 I can think of it i look on my credit report I am sure I have a minimum of at least 10
It does not seem to negatively effect my credit score in anyway, not that i worry about my score i am not interested in borrowing any money

It seems that most people responding to this thread have either no cards at all, have a couple of cards that they pay off each month, or they have multiple cards but rarely use. Seems all the people -- like me -- who have cards with revolving balances on them aren't replying! So I'll break the ice...

We have 6 credit cards:
USAA Mastercard (revolving balance)
Citi Simplicity (revolving balance)
Discover (revolving balance)
Citibank (revolving balance)
American Express ($0 balance)
MBNA ($0 balance)

We unfortunately have a lot of credit card debt, but we are diligently paying it down and have very low APRs (average 4.3%), so that helps.

I have to think about this....

2 mastercards
1 visa
1 discover
1 kohl's
1 furniture store

I think that's it. I don't keep a balance on any of them. Paid off every month....... except..... a couple weeks ago I purchased new furniture on a 12 month 0% interest. I'll keep the balance on that one but pay it off before the 12 months are up. I have the money, but I'd rather earn interest having it sit in my bank account rather than paying for the furniture outright.

we have 1 card - Bank of America Platinum at Prime +1% which is a special rate for employees of the bank... of course I haven't worked at the bank for about 5 years but they never cancelled it or adjusted the rate so who am i to complain?

We had our card maxed out ($12k) about this time last year - young mindset, not focused on saving or building wealth. We paid it off about 6 months ago - $0 balance! excellent right!? yep. then the unexpected...

Wife was employed by a "friend" of ours that ended up being a real bad guy and bounced payroll checks - nice huh? so we had to rely on our credit card to make ends meet (that's what they're for right?)

now we're back at about $11k on the card and are again diligently paying it down.

We have the following.

1. Amex - I use it, pay if off each month
2. Capital One Visa, hubby uses it, pay it off each month
3. Discover -0 balance - don't use it...use to when we went to sam's but it's just sitting around now, I keep it because once I don't work and get a free costco memebership I will go back to Sam's

I think hubby has a few for work, but they are for work and work pays them.

We also have Visa Debt cards, but rarely use them, unless we need cash back on something.

I just realized that I'm not 100% sure. We have 2 that we use actively. There's another 4 or 5 that are open, but never used. I could go to my files or my archived credit report and find out, but I'm not sure off the top of my head. That's probably not a good thing.

I only use one. But I technically have 5 in my name.

Main: MBNA/BofA card from The Motley Fool (points).
Backup: Providian with huge credit limit. Charge 1 thing each year to keep it active.
Mom's: She lives out of the country, if she needs something, I charge it to her card. Or if she tells me to go buy my own birthday present

Stores: Home Depot and Jared. Should cut them up, used once each for the "0% Interest for a year" promotion.

I have 16 credit cards.

6 Citibank
2 Chase
2 Discover
2 Amex
1 MBNA
1 PNC
1 BOA
1 Kohl's

I use 3 of the cards actively, which I pay off in full every month.

I also carry a balance of $8K on three of the cards at zero % interest.

I never paid a dime in CC interest but I have received hundred if not thousands of dollars in benefits though the years using my credit card.

My wife and I have 2 credit cards, but use only one. We used to use more but found it unwieldy. By the way, if you decide to stop using a credit card, put it away or destroy it. BUT DON'T REQUEST THE CARD ISSUER TO CLOSE YOUR ACCOUNT. DOING SO CAN HURT YOUR CREDIT RATING.
