It isn't a good deal if you don't need it
Repeat after me: It isn't a bargain if I don't need it. I shouldn't something just because I found a great price.
A co-worker was just telling me she's hooked on craigslist. People are selling all kinds of things really cheap. She just sent an e-mail to find out if a headboard set was still available. And someone is selling a 2 year old oven really cheap.
That's great if you happen to need a headboard or an oven. She doesn't need either, but can't pass up the price.
She asked if I've gone on the site. I said I've looked once or twice, but since there is nothing we really need, I see no reason to browse. She said she doesn't really need anything either but the prices are great so she keeps looking and buying.
No wonder people's finances are in the shape they are.

Sounds like she's addicted to shopping!
I agree. Don't buy if you don't need it.
This goes for free things as well. Whenever my mom gets on a kick to declutter her house she is always asking if I want her things, or will give things to my children as gifts. Just makes for too much clutter on my end. If given a choice, I say no to her castaways.

Hey it sounds like coupons, buying food you don't need because it's on sale.

lol... i think being addicted to shopping is her problem more than craigslist...
i like looking there too but rarely buy anything... mostly we've used it to look for decent cheap cars for family members... we also use it to sell our stuff and declutter our house....

i have to agree. That is why I don't use a lot of coupons. I only buy it if I need it, if I have a coupon, great! Just because I have a coupon doesn't mean I will buy something I don't really need.

I had lunch today with a friend who was complaining about his wife's Dollar Store addiction. She can't resist the bargains, and he can't abide the clutter.

Re: It isn't a good deal if you don't need it
Oh, you have all discovered my guilty little shame...but I limit my shopping to once a month or so, and only in thrift stores (mostly clothing for myself or my kids).
I have gotten much better about asking myself if I really need something. I am particularly guilty of this in grocery stores when I find a good deal. I have to ask myself if anyone in my family will even eat this particular item, and I have gotten much better about walking away when the answer is "probably not".

totally agree deal isn't better than nothing IMO.
on other peoples clutter, I have learned to take it with a 'I'll think on it and see' because I will gladdly donate it to the good will if a good home isn't found, and I wont then have to hear the offer again in a year, plus some good things do come eventually, just have to sift thru a lot of crap to get to it sometimes...

As someone who is currently selling on Craigslist (as part of my pre-relocation de-acquisitioning), I am glad there are people like her out there!!

Re: It isn't a good deal if you don't need it
I sometimes have this problem, but this is why I rarely purchase online. When I'm in the store, I'll pick up some great deals, but usually end up walking around and putting them back, reasoning that I don't want/need them enough for the effort of waiting in line, paying hard-earned cash, and then finding a place for them.

That is the reason why I quit shopping also. I have not been to a mall in about 6 hours. It takes a lot of time and effort to go to a mall. The closest one is a 2 hour drive, one way. Actually, I meant to say, I have not been to a mall in about 6 years!!

Ima - My, my, it's been 6 hours since your last mall trip?! You are so restrained!
I'll bet you meant 6 months ...

Re: It isn't a good deal if you don't need it
I hate shopping at the mall. When I shop, I want to push around a shopping cart to carry my stuff (coat, kids, merchandise, etc). I would shop alot more at the mall if they had shopping carts. Walmart has nice big carts and it is so easy to take a leisurely stroll through Walmart and spend $100+ on things you didn't even know you "needed" until you walked in!

I was just telling myself this about Valentines Candy but I think I am going to look for the half price items as soon as I finish typing.

I'm sure you are not alone. I guess the problem is the nightmare it would create having everyone pushing around a cart since mall stores tend to me relatively small and compact. Plus, everyone would need the elevator to get from floor to floor with their carts. It would probably be a logistical nightmare.
On a related note, there is a 2-story Target store nearby that has a really cool shopping cart escalator that runs alongside the people escalator. So you push your cart onto the conveyor and you ride next to it as you go up or down. I've never seen anything like it anywhere else. I guess the malls could use that same system if they wanted to.

they put in a 2 story target in buckhead (atlanta) around 98 or 99. that escalator for the carts was frugal entertainment for me and my college friends!

IKEA has the shopping cart escalators too. You always see people looking around dumbfounded on how they're supposed to use it.
