Default Dumb excell question

I know I am late, but I am thinking of ditching the paper checkbook (well actually I am almost out of room)

I do know how to make one cell add or subtract another, but I want it to automatically do that every time I input a debit or credit, and I know I did it once, eons ago..but I am too lazy to filter thru the help files today, so I thought I would rely on the expertise of wonderful SA members

I just want a simple total column, one that automatically fills in old balance +/- debit/credit column.....whats the secret trick?

If you want it like a registar with separate colums for deposits and withdrawls then the formula would look something like this..... =(Previous Total)+(depoist)-(withdrawl)
Then you would copy that down the colum. It would be easier for me to set up a whole spread sheet registar. It would take all of two minutes and I could email it to you....let me know if you want me to.

I tried to attach it, but it will not accept the excel file format.

Okay you should have it. Let me know if you want it tweaked any which way. You will have to continue to copy down the formula and if you need to know how just let me know.

New dumb question, how do I add a whole column, without having to input each and every cell name? like for a big long subtraction problem?

You can also hit that odd look E symbol. It is the summation sysmbol. If you want to change the default cells it choose, just but the curser between the () and the click and hold the block of cells you want to add up.

Hope that makes sense. Easier to explain by showing, but hard to do that via the internet.

Thanks for the thread. This inspired me to start using excel for my check register also. Can't seem to write enough checks to keep up with the check registers!!

Or you can change the formula (at the top where it says fX) to:

=SUM(A2:A15)

if you want to add everything in column A from A2 through A15 inclusive, for example.
