Things You Never Thought You Could Sell
The concept of this post is for people to post things that they have sold on auction sites like ebay. But thats not just it, it has to be things you would'nt normally think you would get money for but you did.
Weird things like empty fragrance bottles, I mean who would want a empty fragrance bottle?? But people do as I have just found out when I sold my wife's empty Angel perfume bottle.
This may help people who have things lying around which they don't think they could sell and acquire the little bits of money to help to get debt free. So hope its a success.

Re: Things You Never Thought You Could Sell
Well, my husband has about 700 old beer cans, each are different. We paid for many of them about 30 years ago. Any buyers??

Re: Things You Never Thought You Could Sell
Yeah Ima there are folks on ebay who would buy them! They'll buy ANYTHING and I do mean anything. One guy just paid big bucks for some snowballs, I've seen people buy dirty socks (foot fetish people), to advertise on someone's chest, etc.
I've sold lots of stuff on ebay, these are all examples of stuff I was wondering if anyone would buy ...an old rusted out auto emblem for 12.00, a non-working toy-train power station over 200.00, a pink can-can I bought for $2.00 at a garage sale brought in over 30 dollars, a pair of 70's pink hose in the original package that I paid a dime for sold for over 10.00.
Then there have been things I was sure would sell, but didn't.
Go figure.

Re: Things You Never Thought You Could Sell
When we were first married, we rented my wife's great aunt's house. She had moved in with family due to illness. The house hadn't been cleaned out first - we got that job. In the basement, she kept a small pantry. I found a bag of really old Kool-Aid packets. I certainly wasn't going to use them, so I put them on Ebay. I got over $40 for them.

Re: Things You Never Thought You Could Sell
My husband had a telescope that broke. We tried to sell it in our garage sale for $5 thinking someone might use it for parts but no takers. As he was headed to the garbage can with it, I said "Hey, let's try selling it on eBay". He finally agreed to it and we sold it for over $100. Quite a shock since we didn't pay much more than that for it new.

Re: Things You Never Thought You Could Sell
Maybe this is a stupid question, but how do you figure out what to charge for postage and handling if you do sell on Ebay? Running to the post office for every item could be a problem.

Re: Things You Never Thought You Could Sell
Yep vishenda - really dirty socks. No kidding.
Right now under stinky socks on ebay are listed one pair for $99. Here's a listing that just completed...item # 280068474454 . Nope - not mine!
Folks will buy ANYTHING and many crossdressers and others w/unusual fetishes like the anonymity that ebay and online purchases can give them for buying things they want - as many sellers keep buyers info private!

I weigh the packaged on my bathroom scale, and add a bit. Then I go to www.usps.com and select the 'Calculate Postage' tab.

Re: Things You Never Thought You Could Sell
Yes, I wondered about that as well. Is it easy to set up an EBay seller account? I have purchased things off ebay and have been a buyer. Do you then take a photo of your item or can you pull photo of a similar item off the internet? I have some text books I would like to sell.

Re: Things You Never Thought You Could Sell
I use a postal scale I bought at Staples for about $20. Works great.
cschin4 - You should always use your own photos. Copying photos from other websites, other sellers, etc. can get you in trouble and get your auctions pulled by ebay. It violates seller policy.

Re: Things You Never Thought You Could Sell
An "antique" flour mill my grandfather built sold for $80ish and that had to be a local auction since shipping would have been impossible. (Keep in mind we didn't even know what this was until we saw the grain in the cracks.)
A 60s vacuum that didn't sell for $5 at my garage sale sold for $250 (+$40 shipping) (Good thing it didn't sell at the garage sale.)
An old pamplet from NSP (the local gas company) sold for $14.
I picked up 30 or so "Orbitz" soda when my dollar storee was clearing them out for a quarter. They've fetched as much as $15. The scarier thing was when the boxes sold too!

For textbooks I would recommend half.com. The ad is free and you set your own price, plus you can leave items up until they sell.

Re: Things You Never Thought You Could Sell
So what I'm hearing is...if it doesn't sell at a garage sale it will make dollars on ebay. Isn't that just amazing!! Great thread.

I would think that it was to decorate a kitchen nostalgically. I have a friend who's really into Coke stuff. Her whole kitchen is covered with items dating back to when Coke first came out to other more modern things.
I've also seen a lot of older kitchen stuff sold in antique stores. What really comes to mind is old Schilling's spice containers...some with spices still in them. I'm sure that no one uses the spices, just the containers to get a certain "look".
