I also don't like to split the bill but I would say it depends on who we are going out with, meaning which friends. I wouldn't mind splitting it with some of them even though I've ordered a meal that costs less than theirs because I know they'll return the favor.

Coworkers are not an issue for me but, when it comes to my close circle of friends we all understand each other well. It's never an issue.

If I invite you to dinner, it's all on me. If you invite me to dinner it's all on you. This is for either a restaurant or in our homes. If you're invited to someones home you can bring something as a gesture, and I usually do, but it's not mandatory.

That way you only do what you can afford. When I go out I like to have a nice time. I don't want to end the evening fussing over the bill.

My friends and I usually split the bills. We don't expect the other person to pay our meal because we're poor.
