Default Graduating from a Student Credit Card

Today I was looking online at my credit card details, because I have a student credit card and am graduating in the spring. Specifically, I have a Visa Classic II Student card. I noticed that it said there's a $15 annual fee if you have this card but don't have a student banking package...I currently do have this package since I'm a student and therefore don't pay the annual fee.

So, I gave Visa a call to inquire about this. The rep told me that my bank package will change to a non-student one the August after I graduate, and my Visa would be switched to a regular Visa Classic II. One problem with this that he didn't mention (but I could see online): that card has a $35 annual fee! It's so sneaky that they would upgrade the card (which seems like a good thing) which actually has a higher fee. The fellow did mention that there are other cards with no annual fees, though.

I'm glad I called - if I hadn't, I don't know if I would have paid close enough attention to my credit card when my bank package changes in the summer. I probably would have gone along with it changing to the non-student version of my credit card, and not notice the higher annual fee until I was billed for it.

Has anyone else had to deal with "graduating" from a student credit card?

Default Re: Graduating from a Student Credit Card

My bank didn't change my bank account, I don't think. Of course, my credit cards weren't student cards either. Discover and all those guys set up shop on campus, but the cards I got were just regular cards. Certainly there's no sense in keeping a credit card that has a fee but no benefits. Pick out a shiny new card with lots of benefits (read: cash back).
