That depends. For instance, many companies offer matching funds with their 401(k) plans. While you may not have the flexibility you refer to, you wouldn't want to just pass on that.

In Tina's case, its not an option. Tina, you may also want to look at E*TRADE. Please report back as to which company you went with and how the process went for you.

Unfortunately it's very rare for rollover funds to qualify for company matching.

I think there are a few situations where rolling over to your new company's 401k would be good -- for example if you have good funds available to you that are closed to new investors. But I think 95% of the time rolling over to an IRA is the best move.

I didn't mean to imply that though, in the context, I can see that I did. I was merely addressing the notion that a 401(k), in general, is sometimes a better choice than an IRA.
