Providian, now owned by Washington Mutual, gives you a FAKO score that is generally updated monthly. I don't know if WaMu is now doing this on their cards as well.

Again, it's a FAKO, not a real FICO. Good enough for monitoring, not so good I'd count on it before applying for a mortgage. To my knowledge, there aren't any CC companies providing free FICO scores.

Here is a link to a free FICO score estimator http://www.bankrate.com/brm/fico/calc.asp. It asks you a bunch of questions and then gives you a range of your estimated FICO score. I got 775-825, which is about right.

You can also subscribe to a free 30 day trial of Score Watch at MyFico.com and get your real FICO score for free and then just cancel within the first 30 days, so you won't have to pay anything. Here is the link http://www.myfico.com/lp/FreeFICOScoreAndReport.aspx

Has anybody actually tried this? I would hate to get stuck paying the $89.95 annual fee if it is not, in fact, easily cancelled.

www.annualcreditreport.com is the best. You can check your credit report from the three major agencies (Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian) once a year at no charge. To get your actual score, you will have to pay, which you can do at the same website (it's about $8 or $9, but worth it if you are planning to get any kind of loan). Best advice...sign on to the site and check your report from one agency, then go back in 3 months and check another, then in 3 months third. Then your year will be up, and you can start over again.

You DO NOT get penalized for checking your own credit report.

If you buy a score from this site from TransUnion or Experian, you are NOT getting a FICO score, which is the score that most lenders use. Only Equifax offers the FICO score on this site. To get your FICO score from TransUnion or Experian, go to the FICO site at www.myfico.com.
