Evade taxes for a few hundred bucks
We bought two used cars last week and in the negotiation process I was trying my best to move these guys down in price as low as humanly possible. They finally said, "yeah, we'll do XX price".
So when I sit down with them to go through the paperwork they start telling me on paper the prices of the cars will be A and B, but I will actually pay them C and D. We'll then split the texas sales tax savings and all be doing great.
We practically walked out of there. My wife really did stand up and say, "We're out of here." I waited, and we ended up buying the two cars at the up front, legit price. They were a great deal either way (well, time will tell I guess).
At any rate, interesting experience. I ask the dealer, what will happen if you get caught? "I'll go to jail." Nice plan dude.

Re: Evade taxes for a few hundred bucks
A lot of people actually do this, and they end up the biggest losers. The bigger problem isn’t so much that you cheated the government; the bigger problem is that you lose some legal rights. For example, if you buy a car for $10,000, but the bill of sale is for $5000 and it turns out that the car is a lemon, when you go before a judge, the judge can’t award you $10,000, but only $5000 unless you want to admit to defrauding the government. And even if you admit to it, you face criminal prosecution and he probably will end up rewarding you nothing and ceasing your vehicle.
Salesmen love this kind of deal because they know that the customer has more to lose then they do. Personally, I’d report them. Not only are these men defrauding the government and the tax payers; but most likely they are defrauding their customers as well.

Re: Evade taxes for a few hundred bucks
I'm with reporting them as soon as you have the titles to the new cars free and clear. This is just plain out wrong!
By the way...welcome back from wherever you've been..

If they will cheat in one area of their business, they will cheat in others.
Do you want to trust them to treat you fairly in the transaction?

I'm with your wife. I would have walked out of there. I don't deal with people like this. They prove, by their actions, that they are not trustworthy. Plus, I'd rather give my business to someone else.

My brother gets customers all the time who want him to cheat but he would never do it I think both parties could end up screwed if they did not to mention huge fines & licenenses.

Re: Evade taxes for a few hundred bucks
I suppose in hindsight I should have just walked out of there. It is true that someone else probably deserved the business much, much more.

Re: Evade taxes for a few hundred bucks
That reminds me, I Was to buy a used car when the seller propositioned this. I didn't agree. When I took the car to a mechanic, found out it had some body damage. The guy also did something funny with the car to pass smog (paid a friend mechanic I guess). Didn't get the car...
Funny when I backed out of the deal he practically tried to give the car away. At that point, so not interested...
Just wanted to say I am with the whole idea that you just don't want to deal with people like this in general.
I have been lucky to overall not come into people like this when used car shopping. These stories scare people from buying used.

Re: Evade taxes for a few hundred bucks
I just realized you were talking dealer. Doesn't surprised me - I just think car dealers are are the low of the low - I do not like dealing with them. Then again a car dealer has never put that offer on the table with me.
Wow - I would report that indeed...

I guess it's too late to take the cars back to them and tell them that you choose not to deal with criminals...
