A few years ago we had a chat between the adults and decided that we'd only buy presents for the neices and nephews. This has worked well as we can keep up the relationship that is rinforced each year when the kids say thanks, plus we are not filling each other's houses with junk.

$1,000 per child???
That is my entire gift budget for Christmas AND birthdays combined for the 2 of us, 5 kids, 2 parents, an aunt and any extras that come up during the year!
