Last year we spent $850 on gifts and other holiday expenses.

A few years ago we had a chat between the adults and decided that we'd only buy presents for the neices and nephews. This has worked well as we can keep up the relationship that is rinforced each year when the kids say thanks, plus we are not filling each other's houses with junk.

For those members of the family without kids we still exchange small presents.
