See my other thread: Why you shouldn’t give to charities… …until you retire or die.
Personally, I think it's better to give your time then your money. |

In short, give what you can. You'll feel good about it and others will benefit from it. And if it helps, include it in your budget. |

I believe the Word of God and thus I believe in tithing 10% of my income to where I get my spiritual guidance and the Bible says to "feed my sheep" and I do that every month with orphans and widows/widowers. It is something I look forward to doing and have been doing for many years now. There have been situations in my life that I didn't know how I was going to make it through after I tithed, but God helped me make it through and the end of the situation was better than the start! It works!! I don't believe in forcing my belief on anyone. God gave us all free choice.

I've developed a habit of consistently tithing and I'm glad I can. I think it has far-reaching ramifications that go beyond the Bible (though that's certainly a legitimate reason). Giving money empowers you psychologically. It reenforces the idea that you control your money.

You couldn't have said it better. I believe in 10% of your income, plus your time (volunteer, assisting you church, etc) Its amazing how it is full circle and always comes back to you when you need it. |

I give all I can. At this point in my life I have little time for volunteering, but will start again when my kids are older and more independent (and can volunteer with me!) So I give a lot more $$$ than time, but it'll balance out later on.

If you've read other threads you know what I think. I BUDGET 10% right off the top, plus more whenever I can and all the time I can spear. I even took time to serve as a missionary and it was the best time I could have ever given. It has paid me back more than I could ever have given. Give wisely, give freely, and it will bless your life.

I give whatever I can also. Once I saw a man with a sign that said he would work for food. I don't know if it was a scam or not, but I pulled over and gave him all the tips I had made that day. It made me feel good.

I give my time AND my money. I prefer a heated and air conditioned church so utility money has to come from somewhere. Sorry, just my pet peeve. If you don't have money to give then giving of your time is better than nothing and sometimes time is the most valuable thing you can give but charities and churches need money too. |

I focus on a verse in the bible whenever I think about titheing, which goes something like "give what you've decided in your heart to give", meaning if you have to force yourself to give, just because you feel obligated, then it's not right. But if you have it in your heart to give, then you give. Even though we're always short on money, I find that when I give it away, I end up better off at the end of the month financially. When we try to pinch too much, and don't give any, somehow we end up totally broke. But other time that we've given some away, or even a lot away, we end up better. I think it must be because when we give, it makes us happy, and when we don't feel depressed and/or stressed out, we're less likely to try to fill that need with going out to eat and buying special things for ourselves. We give time, goods, and money.

I give according to the need. Some places starting up have the money but not enough people to get the work done. I've mucked stalls and groomed horses to help an organization that uses equine therapy to help disabled children...and I've bought them a horse or two, too. I've used time to write letters to help organizations get grants, and I've given out my own grants.
Give where you see the need, and ask what is needed before you give. And Ima, I'm right there with you donating on the side of the road. |

I give when I feel like giving. My parents raised me to give 10% and I try to do that, but sometimes I just don't feel like giving. I don't give money to a church, but rather I donate my money to the mission in town and to world vision.

These are two of my favorite Bible verses on giving because......IT WORKS!! Again...it's a matter of one's choice and belief.
Psalm 41:1-3 NLT (New Living Translation) "Oh, the joys of those who are kind to the poor. The Lord rescues them in times of trouble. The Lord protects them and keeps them alive. He gives them prosperity and rescues them from their enemies. The Lord nurses them when they are sick and eases their pain and discomfort." Proverbs 28:22, 25, 27 (NLT) "A greedy person tries to get rich quick, but it only leads to poverty. Greed causes fighting, trusting in the Lord leads to prosperity. Whoever gives to the poor will lack nothing. But a curse will come upon those who close their eyes to poverty." |

I try to do both - time and money. I do believe in tithing (giving 10%), but right now, that amt is just not realistic due to other obligations on my money. It is a goal to work for, along with all manner of other goals.

I will always advocate tithing. 10% off the top before any other bills are paid. Not only has that produced financial results (enough money for the rest of the bills seemed to come out of nowhere), but psychologically I have been able to show appreciation and faith in the higher power for taking care of CJ and myself.

There was a time when I couldn't tithe and I really felt guilty. Others condemned me for it. Then I read in 2 Corinthians 9:7 the following:
"Let each one give as he has made up his own mind and purposed in his heart, not reluctantly or sorrowfully or under compulsion for God loves a cheerful giver." I did just that and the Lord opened up a way for me to have blessings untold. God looks at the heart and the willingness to give. Tithing will become a part of your daily life as doors will be opened up for you and your willingness to do it will increase as you will have tried everything else and feel why not give tithing a chance? |
