I see nothing wrong with giving to charity after you pass away or as long as you can afford it.

Evad nothing wrong with your confidence but there are wealthier people than you scheming on ways to make more and they are doing this through outsourcing. Unless you are an expert in burgeoning EE niche like superconductor/nano technology no one is secure in their job. I know if I ran a fortune 500 company I would restructure it and have as few research personnel as possible in the states. I would definitely tap the resources where I only have to pay them 20% or less than the going rate here.

My boyfriend was engineering & physics at an ivy league school for undergrad, he could have started at $58k + relocating at the place where he did a co-op, but he opted to start on his PhD full time.

I wish my old church did that. When I found out how the money was being wasted by the priest to pay for male prostitutes and gambling, I was furious and found a new denomination. I'd gladly take my money back. Now the members (and many stayed) who tithe are just paying for legal expenses.

That ratio is actually changing rapidly. Many countries are finding themselves in shortages of people for high tech and research jobs. The biggest savings in overseas R&D is the money saved from not having to pay taxes and not having to deal with an abundance of regulatory laws (which becomes expensive). Also, some research isn't legal in the USA anymore.

I'm sorry but I'm no different than anyone else.
You're right -- you're no different than anyone else.

You have just as much potential to lose your job, for your house to burn down, to go through a divorce and have to pay alimony, to have a child who becomes terminally ill, to be disfigured and/or disabled in a horrible accident, and so on and so on...

I have known people who have experienced one or more of those traumas in their lives. And guess what? It didn't matter how smart they were or how capable they had been before these bad things happened to them. It didn't matter their level of education or how much money they had or what kind of flashy car they drove. It didn't matter if they worked 20 hr/wk or 100 hr/wk. They needed help, and thankfully there are more people in the world who do NOT share your selfish, conceited attitudes than do.

I suppose you can be forgiven at least in part: You're only 22 years old. So your comments are based on your experience thus far in life, which is not much. You haven't experienced enough to understand that "what goes around, comes around". And given your attitude, whenever you have a difficult experience to contend with -- and, believe me, you WILL -- you will get exactly what you have given others: Nothing.

~ Jenney

ps. When I reread your post again, I realized that the way you describe your place in the world is not any different than how a baboon or a dung beetle or any other animal can be described. Survival of the fittest, no concern about anyone else around you, etc.
