Before you take on another credit card, let me explain my experience.
Gas prices were going up so I thought a BP gas card would be ideal. I'd take that amount normally paid in cash and just earmark it for my gas card. The first few months went very well. Then stuff started happening. Receipts were lost in my back seat ...thus not recorded. And with two cars on one gas card, the amount of money i was spending each month was higher that I'd imagined. We problably took more family trips because it SEEMED like we had more money in checking...until we got the next bill. The "pay it off at the end of the month" plan worked for a few months but because of a few points mentioned above and money got tight, we found ourselves with $900 on our gas card. We stopped using the card and started paying down that debt. In time, that debt was gone. If you want to save 5% - run all your errands at once. Use public transportation, ride a bike, walk, go shopping with other people and all ride together. Gas cards can save you money but ultimately it's changing behavior that saves money. |

quiznut1: Unfortunately I was declined by Citi. I already have a Student Citi card, and I think that is why they declined me.
debtdude: As much as I would love to cut back on my driving, unfortunately that isn't a possibility. I have a 100 mile roundtrip commute to and from school. And then, I go to work. Right now that is the only driving I am doing. I knew my driving would increase once I transfered to this new school. I've already budgeted the gas expense. I just wanted to get 5% back on it. I don't really lose receipts and I also track my expenses online. Also, I am very faithful about paying off my card every month because I feel very strongly about not having any debt. Also, my job situation is VERY good. I work for two small but very successful businesses and know that my job situation won't be changed. |

The only difference between the cards is Chase Cash Plus has an annual calendar yearly rebate limit of $300, and you can redeem 5,000 points for a $50 check. The Chase Rewards Plus has an annual calendar yearly rebate limit of $750 ($600 cash, $150 in gift cards, etc...), however, the redemption of points is not as good for $50. 6,000 points for a $50 check, or 10,000 points for $100 (I recommend this one). Also, points expire in 5 years under Chase Rewards Plus, and 3 years under Cash Plus. |
