If I didn't get my tax return in on time, what should I do?

Default Re: taxes

In the future, if you know you aren't going to be able to file your return on time, you can get an extension by filing Form 4868 (Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return) on or before April 15th. This will allow you to avoid the late filing tax penalty, but you must pay the amount of the tax estimated to be due.

If you did not file this extension, you still should file your tax return asap. You will most likely be charged a late filing penalty and interest on the amount you owe, but the longer you wait, the higher these will be.
