i'm like abowers... 24, grad, 1350 SATs, except no student loans, healthy gene pool and (eek, this is gonna sound vain *hangs head sheepishly*) more than average attractive... they would probably accept me..

except....

I wouldn't do it... nope, nope, nope... for so many reasons...not least the fact that we'd like to have our own kids eventually...
even low dose birth control pills had too much hormones for me... and i would really hate daily self-injections and all the other invasive stuff...and the idea of possible health side effects...i'd have to be desperate...
and there's a lot of other stuff i'd do before i ever got that desperate...

just a thought: instead of thinking about the woman who's 'taking money for her unborn kids', why is it that only one person on this thread has mentioned the fact that these eggs allow other couples to get pregnant and raise a family of their own?

why is donating eggs so much more heinous than, say, being matched with an adoptive family who pays for the birth mother's expenses during her pregnancy?

what about sperm donation? does that cross the same moral line as a woman donating her eggs?

I don't think anything is wrong with donating eggs OR being matched with an adoptive family. It's great that both of those things allow couples to raise a child if they are unable to on their own.
It's just that I personlly would not go through the process of hormone injections, etc. to donate eggs.

Personally, I have no moral problem with egg donation. My issue is with taking unneccesary risks. Sperm donation is totally harmless. It is not an invasive procedure. There are no drugs or needles or anesthesia involved. On the other hand, there are lots of things that could potentially go wrong with egg donation.

Sure, that way I'd know for sure I'd have kids, even if they weren't mine. The extra $ would come in handy too.

I think there is a huge difference between selling your eggs and just donating them. I would have been willing to give my cousin some of my eggs. She was infertile for 15 years, finally adopted a kid and got pregnant a few months later. I would have done that for her, knowing how close we were genetically and emotionally and knowing that any resulting babies would be raised in the best home and I would know them and see them from time to time. It wouldn't be easy but watching her go through what she went through for all those years was horrible.

As to donating for strangers, well, my biggest fear would be what if some of these half brothers and sisters out there ran into each other one day and got married. The genetic ramifications there would give me pause. Do they even have a way of tracking that? And I would worry about whether those children were being raised in loving homes. And never knowing where they were? That would be hard.

Good point. Sounds like plot material for a soap opera or something.
I don't know how they would track that.

I conceived my twins with the help of an anonymous egg donor. It was very expensive but worth every penny! I appreciate her donation (she was paid $2500). I would not have been able to have children without her help.

Of course I totally disagree with the post that said infertility is an indication that someone should not have children. Infertility is a medical issue. I have never met anyone that was willing to go through fertility treatments that did not truly want children.

I will be paying for our fertility treatments for several years. Again...worth it, worth it, worth it...thank you to anyone that is willing to donate eggs. You are helping someone achieve a lifelong dream.

how exactly different is it when a woman does it or a man? either way the kids can be related, right? Yet, no one has an issue when a man donates sperm.

It's definitely an issue regardless of who is donating. I saw an article in Self magazine at the gym a couple weeks ago where some guy had made TONS of donations in the 1980s-- and it's turning out that he had some sort of rare late-onset disorder, so all these teenagers are having issues now. The article lists a bunch of other donations-gone-wrong.

Also regarding controlling for how many children can be created from one person's sperm, it looks like that's up to the sperm bank to decide.

Also, in trying to find a link to that article just now I came across so many other similar articles where late-onset diseases are showing up more freqently than they normally do and are being linked to sperm banks.
