Default Stock Market

okay so I just made an account at sharebuilder, and I have a few stocks I am keeping my eye on, and would like to invest within the next week.... I am going to invest small, nothing that would hurt me if I lost it!!!

so y question is which stock buying site would be best for a novice and least expensive? sharebuilder is like $4 a trade, I think?
Has anyone else had much luck with it?
I plan on keeping the money there for a long term investment.... My father lost ALOT of money in the stock market but he'd buy one day and sell the next when he saw the stock teeter..... which is not what it's meant for!

I got in with a stock that has a DRIP,divident re investment plan. If you buy one share, you can buy directly thru the company.. It has been many years since I have done this but I am sure you can find some stocks that offer DRIP's. I know home depot use to, so did Wendys and Walmart.

Billsgirl, I used Sharebuilder for a while. It's fine, no problems, but it didn't really cut it for me. The important thing you have to keep in mind with SB is that the $4 stock buys only happen on Tuesdays. If you want to take advantage of a dip in a stock or ETF, you really can't pull the trigger right away. Also -- selling the stock or ETF costs $16 or so.

Take a look at Scottrade. Buying is $7, but selling is $7 too. Also the trade happens almost instantaneously when you put in an order (assuming the market is open of course).

Minimum balance is $500.

I haven't experienced any problems on either site as far as stock availability, but I don't try to buy anything too off the wall either. Someone else may have some more info on that...

I used moneypaper when I first started, but there is a charge. It has been so long, I can't remember how much.
