Default Preparing For Winter Heat Costs

With winter just around the corner and the prospect of much higher energy bills to heat your house this winter, now is the time to prepare to keep the energy bills under control.

The National Energy Assistance Directors' Association is predicting that heating a typical house in colder areas of the US with natural gas this winter will cost $1,568. That is an increase of 64% over last year when it cost $957 to heat the same home.

Here are some no cost recommendation from the Personal Finance Advice Blog that can help reduce your winter heating costs:

1. Call your local utility to get an energy audit
2. Or use the free government virtual household energy audit
3. Turn down the thermostat as possible while still being comfortable
4. Wear a comfortable extra layer of clothing
5. Close heating vents in rooms not used
6. Close doors to rooms not used as well as all closet doors
7. Open curtains & shutters on south-facing windows
8. Close curtains & shutters on north-facing windows
9. Turn off ventilating fans when not in use
10. Close the chimney flue tight

We are already panning to keep the thermostat at 65F. Well at least that is the plan!
