You Owe The Government $145,000
Every single adult and child owes the government $145,000 according the the Government Accountability Office. A family of 4 owes over half a million dollars and that figure doesn't take into account any of the personal debt (credit cards, student loans, mortgages, car loans, etc.) that you may have. If you only count those earning a full-time salary, each worker currently owes $350,000.
Government long-term promises to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, pensions and veterans health care currently total about $43 trillion and where the figures above come from on what you owe. Those numbers are currently increasing on a daily basis.
While Americans are worried about the Federal deficit (70% according to a recent AP/Ipsos poll of 1,000 adults), they aren't willing to take the actions necessary to reduce the debt. The same poll showed that only 35% were willing to have the government reduce spending with a resulting decrease in services to balance the budget.
The other option - raising taxes to keep the current services - was even less enthusiastically embraced with only 18% saying they were willing to do so. Not surprising, only 1% were willing to cut the deficit by both raising taxes and reducing spending.
