As we reported here back in May that
getting your driver's license could soon be a lot more costly, the nations governors are saying the same thing with predictions of 300% increases in the cost of obtaining a driver's license.
Governors raised objections to the costs of implementing the new requirements with U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff on the final day of the National Governors Association's annual meeting.
The law requires that at least four forms of identification will be needed to obtain a driver's license. States are also required to develop and link databases containing drivers' identities. States have a three year period to comply or their driver's licenses no longer will be accepted as valid ID by federal agencies.
The cost of new driver's licenses will likely be passed onto the people applying for them and estimates range from a $10 to $100 increase in the cost of obtaining a driver's license.
