Timid Robber Says He Targeted Supermarkets
SALEM, Mass. (AP) - A man arrested on bank robbery charges said he targeted satellite branches in supermarkets because he was too bashful to try and rob a real bank, police said.
Joseph DeSalvo, 32, of Lexington, was being held on $100,000 cash bail after pleading innocent Thursday to a June 24 robbery in Danvers.
He was also awaiting arraignment in connection with the robberies of three other Citizens Bank branches located inside Stop & Shop supermarkets in Stoneham, Bedford and North Andover.
"He said he was timid and afraid, and felt it wasn't as serious to rob the banks inside the Stop & Shops than if he had tried to rob regular banks," said Detective Eugene Salois of the North Andover Police Department.
