The market for alternative investing has been huge for as long as the market for more traditional investments have existed. It's common for wealthy individuals to buy and resell paintings, sculptures, cars, vintage weapons, and etc. Perhaps this type of investing has increased in recent years due to low interest rates and a volitile stock market.
A coworker of mine, who is not wealthy at all, trades in musical instruments. He regularily buys and sells old guitars. He does rather well at it, as certain guitars are rare and appreciate in value rather quickly.
