That really doesn't sound like much. I had $14,500 when I graduated and that was in 1986. I would have expected the number to be higher than that.

I think it's a poor statistic. There are alot of students who make it through college without any debt, whether by scholarships, parents, or whatever. That would significantly lower the average. I expect that among students who graduate college with student loans, the average would be well higher. It also states in the article that for-profit colleges were not included in the survey.
