I thought this was an amazing story when I heard it yesterday on NPR. It really speaks to the power of confidence and trust in an economic system. Amazing.

What an odd idea... I don't think I'm even wrapping my head around how convincing the people that the "fake" currency was stable would stabilize the underlying currency and eliminate inflation...

That is the whole point of any currency - you have to convince people that it is valuable. There is nothing inherently valuable in coins, gold, diamonds, et c. You have to convince people of the value - take De Beers as an example of creating value.
