Phishing Attacks Increase
Citibank got hammered last month with a record number of unique phishing attacks, comprising more than half of the total attacks in the financial services sector, and surpassing eBay as the prime target. Citi experienced 475 unique attacks during April, compared to 98 in March, 58 in February, and only 34 during January. Totally, the financial services industry had 832 unique attacks. eBay was hit with 221 unique attacks during April compared with 110 in the previous month. Tumbleweed Communications and the Anti-Phishing Working Group this morning reported that email fraud and phishing attacks grew by more than 180% in April, with an average of almost 38 new, unique attacks sent out to millions of consumers each day...Phishing attacks use 'spoofed' e-mails and fraudulent Web sites to fool recipients into divulging personal financial data such as credit card numbers, account usernames and passwords, social security numbers, etc...
