This is old news. Studies have shown this for many years. I don't find it surprising at all.

While I would not dispute the end result, I have to wonder if attractiveness does indeed correlate with confidence? I can think of several examples of people who are confident but are not necessarily attractive (including females). Conversely, I can think of several examples of attractive people who are not necessarily confident (including females).

What a load of crap. Maybe in some industries like entertainment, sales or public relations it makes a difference. People that are the "face" of a company. What about the rest of us?

Does an airline pilot do better if he's handsome? How about an engineer? A math teacher? Your insurance agent? I doubt it.

I can tell you that I'm not very pretty, but I made $280k last year. If I had all my hair maybe it would have been more like $500k?

wincrasher, there have been dozens of studies over the years on this topic and they always show the same thing. There must be some truth to it. Right or wrong, people are judged on their appearance. Good looking people are more likely to be treated better than unattractive people. They are more likely to be hired, more likely to get raises, more likely to get promotions, etc.

Well there are also studies that show that attractive people are thought to be less intelligent - especially women with big boobs.

There are studies that show senior citizens have more sex than any other age group.

I'm not lovely and I can attest that many employers favor those pretty ladies...I had an adminstrator tell me I was lucky he hired me because I wasn't pretty and was overweight and that many principals wouldn't have hired me because of that. Imagine what that did to my self-esteem!

Wow, I'm really offended by that (but not at you). Unless the profession itself is image-related, why should how someone look even remotely matter next to the ability to get the job done?

That said, I recognize the reality that some employers do look at things that way, whether they will admit it or not. And I think that's very unfortunate.

I think it depends. I remember while I was in college, my mom told me she read an article saying how attractive people are more likely to get hired. I have read similar articles. I would imagine that it is true up to a certain relative amount of attractiveness and then it would not matter too much.
I think women who are thin and attractive can be victim of not being liked by other women. I used to be slightly uncomfortable when the whole office would go on a diet together, and I didn't need to lose any weight.

If I were hiring someone which I have never done, I would like to hire someone who exuberated health. I mean nice teeth, good skin, and energy as well as clean and well gromed. I don't care if you turn heads.

There was a tv news story saying people are resorting to plastic sugery to get an edge in this dire job market also. That is kind of sad to me.

I have not found this true, but when I was working in education and frequenting teacher boards, many people lamenting the "perky young blonde fresh out of school" getting the job over experience. It was a recurring theme.

Just the other day I saw a study that showed that the price increase of US postal stamps has exactly matched the rate of gobal warming. Therefore if we just lower the price of stamps, it will combat global warming.

Yes, and all 3 made their way in life by starting their own companies (or did Trump get his start with his father). None of them did something working for others where looks would be an issue.

Hey now, let's not lump The Woz in with the rest. He is a big, beautiful geek of a man. Growing up, he made one of the best computers that I've ever had the pleasure of using. Ah, Apple IIgs, you are missed!

Maybe the study only holds true in certain professions then. I guess I could see where a beautiful waitress would earn more money than a not so pretty one.

In the tech field though, I have seen some only-a-mother-could-love people advance quite far above their beautiful but dumber counterparts.

Skills and talent still count for something...except in management.
