Default The Economy: Hundreds Line Up For Jobs At New In-N-Out

Around 500 people lined up in West Sacramento to apply for 50 jobs that pay about $10 an hour and a local fast food restaurant.

The job-seekers woke up early and bundled up in hopes of getting a job at a new In-N-Out Burger. Some of them already have jobs, but are looking for something better.

"People get benefits, starts at $10 an hour, people get free food and a chance to move up," said Daneen Kenworthy...

In-n-Out definitely needs to expand over here to the east coast. That would ROCK.

Some industries are significantly less succeptible to economy woes--doctors, teachers, lawyers, etc. .... fast food in America is one of them. ^_^

Interesting.

I saw a giant $10/hour hiring sign on the corner by my house (Sacramento). You know what the funny thing is? The lonely neighborhood over by the sign is rather upscale. I found it an odd placement for that kind of sign. But maybe they figure with all the foreclosures we need it the most. & to be fair there is a school over there so lots of parents & kids driving by that don't live in the neighborhood.

I did take note and think, "wow, the starting pay is good." (Minimum wage is $8 here).

I wonder if that location got as much of a mob.

I'm surprised to see only $10/hr for that in any city in CA. In my midwest city fast food can start at $8.50.

MM, don't the kids of well to do people often take first jobs at fast food joints, like most of teenagedom?

Could be, but there aren't many teenagers over here. Not that In & Out would know that. But I do, so it struck me as odd. I wonder if they put signs up by the high school. Probably.

Do I dare write it? That line in the photo op almost looks like one of
those bleak bread lines of the Great Depression.

Just my initial thought on that - plus the fact people are counting getting free food as a benefit now.

That's my favorite burger shop! I knew they pay better than other fast food places, but $10 to start is pretty good IMO.

Well come to think of it, I was once in a line like that for a fast food job. June 1977. It was a tough time. Every single person hired had either just graduated high school and was college bound, or had just finished first year of college. No one older, no one younger. No one less educated, no one more educated. Gotta say, he even went for the nerd types. The owner did the interviews personally and evidently had a clear idea who he wanted to hire. Uh, I got hired, too.

Not teachers! I am one and my position was cut due to lack of funding from the state. My friend, who taught gifted and talented, lost her job b/c they cut that whole program. They hire bare bones staff at schools around here, classes are packed and programs are being cut.

Sorry that was off topic
