Feed a family of four for $100 a week -- no coupons, no backyard garden or mystery meat.
That was the challenge MSN Money gave me (and, indirectly, my husband and two children). I knew it wouldn't be easy. Even a food stamp allowance for a family of four is $117. With gas and corn prices surging, the retail costs of basic items such as milk, apples, pork chops and potatoes have gone up 8.5% in the past year, according to the most recent American Farm Bureau Federation's Marketbasket Survey... Can a family eat on $100 a week? - MSN Money |

Oh good grief...I used to feed a family of 4 heavy eaters on les than 100 a week, admitedly that was lastyear when gas was a doller less a gallon, but I included all cleaning (laundry detergent and the like) in that 100.
And when I caved to eating out, it was A, with coupons, b cheap, and C. taken from the grocery spending. No it wasn't easy, but it was worth it to not go into debt. |

MSN Money seems to have a history of publishing articles about (and sometimes written by) people who could not stick to their own financial plans even for short periods of time. What is the message in that? "Oh, woe is me! It is impossible to live within my means. It is impossible for anyone to live within their means, so you might as well stop trying and there is no fault in continuing in your overspending ways. That's just the way it has to be."
