Rock Burglar Team Nets $12 Million Plus Since 1993

Ocean's Twelve they're not. No techno-wizardry for the burglars who've been marauding through some of suburban Phoenix's poshest neighborhoods for the past dozen years. Their usual technique is a rock heaved through the master bathroom window, or occasionally a lawn chair, potted plant or barbell. Whatever's lying about.
But like George Clooney, Brad Pitt and their pals in Hollywood's latest crime-caper hit, they're scoring big: somewhere from $12 million to $15 million worth of jewelry and fancy watches. And they're taking the loot from the upscale homes of big names, including former vice president Dan Quayle.
The success of the so-called Rock Burglar — the name given to the team by Paradise Valley detective sergeant Alan Laitsch before authorities concluded that more than one person was involved — has bedeviled police here since 1993.
"It's an organized crew," says Laitsch, 47, a transplanted Chicago-area cop with a wry sense of humor who has come to terms with the realization he may spend a considerable part of his career chasing the wily Rock Burglar team.
