Very good tips. I would add one thing. If you get any bills after the fact for things not covered by the pre-negotiated fees, request an itemized charge list and make sure that everything being billed was actually done. It is very common to have incorrect charges on a hospital bill. For example, perhaps a test was ordered and billed to your account but never actually done, or cancelled but the charge was never taken off. Stuff like that happens everyday. When my wife had surgery in 2006, she was double billed for a particular piece of equipment. The item was brought to her room but then she was given the same equipment in the OR. The one in her room was never used for her, but she got billed for both. When I reviewed the bill, I got them to remove the duplicate charge.
