Default A New Measure for Automobile Efficiency

I was struck by this editorial:

Gasoline's New Math: Miles Per Dollar - MSN Autos

Once you get the idea, you'll never look at driving in the same way again.

I like that miles per dollar suggestion, but toward forming a more complete picture of car costs, it would be even better to include known costs such as insurance, and scheduled maintenance. With the arithmetic suggested, my car today gets 8.37 MPD highway.

I think what strikes me so forcibly about the miles-per-dollar concept is the application.

The mall is about 5 miles from my home, just down the road. I can be there in a matter of minutes.

Do I want to spend $2.25 to travel there and back? Not without good reason.

This is a shocking way to look at it and I didn't know the government was fudging on mpg ratings. The solution of course would be to not allow the oil companies to create these artificial price increases.
