Store Gift Return Policies Tighten
With Christmas now over, many a gift receiver will find that some of the presents received just aren't right. For most, there shouldn't be a problem with returning the gift as long as it is returned in its original packaging, unused and within the designated time period. For those who have abused the return system in the past, however, they may find that returning their items isn't quite as easy as before.
With profit margins tightening and a holiday season that didn't pan out as expected, many stores that used to have "the customer is always correct" return policy are beginning to change their tune.
A number of clothing stores have implemented computer software that tracks the return history of the person. If the software indicates too many returns, too frequent returns or a return fraud pattern, you will likely be denied when trying to return items.
Stores are also becoming much more strict with time limits. If you delay trying to return an item until after all the post Christmas rush has past, you may find that you waited too long and have your return denied. Stores are much more likely to strictly enforce their printed return policy than in past years.
Raising you voice and complaining will likely have little effect. Demand to see the store manager and you will hear the same tune. The stricter policies are coming from store headquarters meaning that the old trick of going higher up won't work near as well as it used to.
Your best bet for having a trouble free experience with any items that you need to return or exchange from the holidays is to take care of it sooner rather than later and within the guidelines specified on your receipt. Not doing so may mean your are stuck with a gift your really don't want.
