I worked at a buffet and we had lots of "hearty eaters" we did not care ,but you know what we just worked there
a privately owned restaurant might be a whole nother ball game,so If you like freebies I suggest you go to a chain where the employees could care less about the bottom line not a mom and pop
the only hard rule I had was to not let people take food home, one day this guy had a huge stack of ribs, he gets up and says "can I take these home? I said sure
then I went over to my boss and said do you see that huge almost 7 foot tall guy over there with the ribs if you do not want him to take them feel free to intervene, my boss little short guy says " uh it'll be alright "

"I ain't that fat, I only weigh 277," Borrelli said.
That's true. 277 is perfectly fine, if you are 7'4".
Seriously, I have often wondered how the buffets manage given the alarming number of obese Americans. Surely, those of us in the minority are paying more because of it. It doesn't justify discrimination like that, but it would be nice if there was someway to pay based on how much you eat, rather than a flat fee for everyone. I like buffets, but at some of the nicer more costly ones, we really don't get our money's worth.

Not at the buffets we've gone to. They are constantly bringing out new trays and refilling the supply. You just have to avoid going at off times when they aren't very busy.

I'm a big guy (6'5", 300 - but not fat...I work out), and I can eat a lot based on how many calories I burn a day. I definitely get my money's worth at the buffet's...however, i do understand to a point, the restaurant's position. We went for chinese food on New Year's Eve. They had crab legs on the buffet. There was one couple in particular who I noticed had several plates of shells on their table, and when the servers refilled the buffet line with crab legs, the two of them lumbered up to it ( they were EXTREMELY OBESE, as in they were wider than taller) and cleaned it out. My wife had to watch for the next refill, and was able to get three individual legs before it got cleaned out again...one for me, one for her, and one for her sister. that was frustrating, but it comes with the territory I guess, of "all you can eat".

A couple of things:
1.) That's the whole risk you take with a running a buffet. Some people are going to eat more, some less. One's job, as an owner of a buffet, is to come up with an across-the-board price that makes a profit over the average of consumption. Charging based on consumption is fine, but rather less like a buffet. It's totally not OK to surcharge certain customers. If you're not profiting, you either need to raise your prices or become a traditional restaurant and charge by the entree.
2.) I understand what the guy was saying about his weight. Putting aside debate about changing perceptions of "normal" body size and anyone's inherent moral superiority for being of average weight , the gentlemen referenced are about 40-60 pounds overweight, which is hardly Springer-worthy. I can understand their surprise at being singled out for their weight, as that degreee over overweight is positively pedestrian these days. You can walk around the mall and see plenty of people 100+ pounds overweight--I can't imagine seeing men of the height/weight they reported and thinking they were at all exceptional.
