What I have always wondered is why on earth a company would name their product a 'Wee'...I really don't know what person wants to go around advertising "I played with my Wee last night..."

I call it the 'why I' cause I cannot say 'wee' with a straight face..sorry. Now I have to go wee.... (pregnant you know, I have to do it a lot)

hmm, maybe those pain meds are making me way to talkative... (dental issue, yes it is safe while pregnant)

My wife bought me a Wii for our anniversary in August. Our friends are telling us how difficult they are to find.

Supply and demand is how this country was built. If people find ways to make money, society today will both embrace that person and criticize them at the same time. Take the good with the bad, is my advice.

The manufactures know if they flooded the market with the games, they would be
a) cheaper (supply goes up)
b) less popular (because everyone has one)
c) need to develop a better one soon

c) should not be underestimated. I work with companies trying to develop new electronics. The business model suggests technology is obsolete every 9 to 18 months. For example if Seagate designs a new diskdrive, they expect within 9 months they need to have a new technology ready, because what they are selling now will not sell at same price in 9 months. This really cuts into profits.

So in the case of a Wii, by mainitaining demand over an 18 month timeframe, the manufacturer keeps peak demand up for their product longer. This saves them development resources.

Me, too, except it was my stir fried vegetables I was trying to hold in.

Actually, I've seriously pondered on being a free-lance reseller. I mean, why not? It's just business. Supply and demand and all that.

I'm a very principled individual. I don't think anything I say over the internet can illustrate just how principled I am in real life. And yet, I feel no guilt or shame over this.

Why would I?

I've seen all sorts of arguments as to why reselling is suppose to be "evil" and hurts "the little guys", but none of the arguments hold water. The bottom line is people feel slighted because they think you're taking away something that should've been theirs for store price that you've obtained and sold it to someone else for a marked up price.

Seriously, if you feel THAT bad about it, DON'T buy it! Or better yet, beat me to the store and buy one for yourself.

The real reason why I didn't go into reselling had nothing to do with pseudo-morality. Nay, it's just that-- with the exception of the Wii-- I haven't come across an item that I thought was worth the trouble.

PS3? Besides the initial hype, I knew it was going to be a dud. iPhone? Besides the initial hype, I knew it was going to be a dud.

By "dud", I don't mean that they're not popular items that people wouldn't want a pretty penny for. By "dud", I mean I saw them more as an overnight fad rather than a sustainable, hot ticket item that I could resell on a consistent basis.

I don't play games as much as I used to (though I'm still using a Nostromo n52 if that says anything) but I still love reading and speculating about the video gaming industry. So, I like to think I'm still fairly in-tune with this particular market (and having a game-crazy teenage son helps too). That makes this kind of side-business a fairly good fit for me.

Finally, the name for Wii. That's suppose to be an expression that has a positive and friendly vibe in Japan. For the longest time, I've speculated that they would change the name once it hits the western shores. (This is especially true since they were willing to change the name of their original console from Famicom to NES.) Looks like I was wrong, even though I still think they should've changed it....

We bought those and had no trouble finding them. Of course we did not HAVE TO have them right away. IT seems to me if you wait a week or 2 there are plenty in abundance. ???

My dh did do the Wii resale thing. He made $200 for standing in line much of the night. Easy money.

I am so with you BA. Plenty of people willing to pay tons. So be it. If they weren't willing to mortgage their home for a game system, it wouldn't be an issue...

Maybe I am biased because we are in the big city and there are plenty of game systems in abundance. But it seems to me people were only paying the big prices because they had to have these systems by a certain date. A simple wait a couple of weeks erases the problem anyway. ?? Certainly out here.

I don't mind resellers. Sometimes they are doing me a favor. I have only bought two items that way though. I don't regret either purchase. Both were items that tended to remain sold out for longer than a year and both would have cost me that same amount as markup for gas to go find them since they were permanently out locally...

Though I would be very surprised to meet many who profited from the ps3 or iphone given supplies were very high...

Update: Now your child can get a rain check for Christmas instead of a Wii. I'm sure he'll be very excited about that.
