Default Big meat company goes belly up

I'm confused... Why wouldn't a company like this have liability insurance to cover this situation? Granted it was a LOT of meat (21.7 million pounds), but wouldn't the risk of a recall be something you'd want to protect yourself against?

A lot of businesses make money on the margins. If no one will buy your product for a certain period of time after but you still have employees, I would imagine even insurance wouldn't pay enough out for loss of future earnings.

I would think it would be easier to let this one go bellyup and start over as a new business. After all, the Topps name is going to be synonomous with 2nd largest recall in US history for some time to come.

For years so called regulatory agencies such as the USDA have turned form being watchdogs responsible for protecting the public into lapdogs of the industries that they're supposed to monitor.
