A New Yorker who moves to Shanghai

This is a really fascinating story about what it's like for an American to live in Shanghai. It does make a point about the natural frugality of the Shanghai people, and also about how unautomated life there is.

For instance, when you buy a plant at the nursery there, a man will come to your house and plant it for you. If you need some string, they will measure and cut the piece you need. (No one wastes anything.) When the author put out her trash, she was embarrassed by the huge bag of junk she was throwing out cus her heighbors hardly had any. They don't use paper products and they eat every bit of food. When the author needed to go shopping for second hand furniture, she found nothing like that exists. People use things until they fall apart.

When you lease an apartment, the landlady will ask you what you want and take you shopping! No joke.
