Why Groceries Prices Are Set To Go Sky High

Some unintended consequences of the alternative fuel ethanol is that you can expect sky high food prices. Record gas prices are only part to blame for rising food prices. Steep demand for ethanol (made from corn) has livestock ranchers paying far more for feed in addition to higher prices for gas - it all means that grocery prices are rising and will continue to do so.

I'll have to try for better downloading at another time, but this has been on my mind since Mexico City workers staged a large lunch time protest over corn prices a few months ago. For the most modest diets in Mexico, tortillas often are the backbone, so when corn prices went up there, it hit people very immediately.

My husband does most of our food shopping, so I have gotten a little out of touch with prices. But I went with him to shop two days ago, expecting to see a lot of the bargains that are usually offered in the week before what I call one of the "barbeque holidays" ---Memorial Day this time. However, I was pretty surprised. One of the meats that was on sale, a cut that is peculiar to and very popular in my city, was definitely higher than the regular price was on our last "barbeque holiday."

I am so glad to have my garden. It's produce will really be worth the work. Even those squirrels that steal my tomatoes (and corn!) might start to look pretty tasty after a while.

I think that there are alot of different vegetables that we could grow. My friend is growing those grape tomato in her back yard patio of her condo. Not to mention that it adds color. My husband loves radishes and I'm considering growing them. The difference in taste is unbelievable when grown at home.

Hopefully they will start using something else instead of corn syrop, maybe something more healthy.

The milk is so expencive now. My dh would drink only whole, but paying 5.19 for 2 gallons would increase our budget or we would have to cut down on other food. So now I buy 2%. Kids don't see the difference, and dh drinks more tea instead now because the milk is not as tasty to him anymore. I drink milk only in my coffe, I use powdered for coffe instead of creamer, or sometimes finish the cup after the kids.

As of growing the garden, after trying growing cucumbers, radishes, tomatoes and other stuff, I figured that the tomatoes grow the best in my front yard, but don't want to grow in my back yard, so I have 5 tomato plants hiding in between my roses row. In my backyard I grow beets and onion, thats the only plants that won't be eaten by snails and other nasty creachures and still grow good even if I forget to water them once in a while. Carrots grow good to, but they don't grow long because the soil is too hard, and I don't want to dig it after I planted something there already. So I stick to the plants that don't require lots of work and still grow. I use green onlion year round in my soups, salads and almost any main dish. I use the beets for soup and some salads too, they grow year round too, plus I can use the top part, leaves, when the plant is still young.

trying growing carrots, potatoes, or any other root or tuber plant in a large plastic container like a sterilite. fill it with soil and plant like normal. it'll be heavy, but it's nice to be able to move the planter around based on changes in the weather.

I have recently thought about getting the round stand that has wheels that I can place any container on and move it around as I want. The other good and easy thing to grow is green onions or scallions. Has anyone tried to grow leeks?
