Default First Lady Gold Coins

By Valerie S. Johnson

Martha Washington joins her husband the President on a new coin this year. While George is pictured on a $1 coin (as we reported on February 16, 2007), the U.S. Mint will feature the first First Lady on a half-ounce gold coin that will go on sale on June 19, 2007 for $429.95. Mrs. Washington will share the spotlight with Abigail Adams, as a coin bearing the second First Lady’s likeness will be offered simultaneously.

The third U.S. President was Thomas Jefferson, but because he was a widower while in office, gold coins with a Liberty design will be offered on August 16, 2007. Dolley Madison gold coins will be the fourth in this series from November 15, 2007.

The U.S. Mint’s original plan was to sell the gold coins only as a set of four, but it recently decided to sell them individually as well. The high cost of the foursome was the deciding factor, according to a Mint spokeswoman. Perhaps there was just no good name for the set of coins. It’s not the First Four First Ladies. What would you call it?

I'd maybe call them the golden girls, since they were the older first ladies.

I wonder why Eleanor Roosevelt couldn't be on the coin that's gonna have a liberty design. Thanks for posting this info, hopefully when they come in circulation, I can say me one of each.
