Default Wal-Mart’s Hourly Employees Get Bonuses

By Valerie S. Johnson

Today was “Associate Celebration Day” for over 800,000 workers at Wal-Mart stores and Sam’s Clubs who split more than half a billion dollars in bonuses. If you do the math, it works out to $651 per person, although the company did not reveal how the amounts were allocated among its employees, referred to as “associates.”

The company did explain that associates receive cash rewards based on the sales performance of the store where they work. Bonuses will now be distributed quarterly rather than annually. This is the first time that Wal-Mart has released details of its bonus programs to the public.

Other new initiatives were announced, such as the Servant Leadership bonus for associates with at least 20 years of employment with the company. The Customer Champion award program will give cash rewards to associates who provide outstanding customer service. Welcome to Wal-Mart!
