Default $60,000 Mattress

By Valerie S. Johnson

You don’t buy a new mattress every day, so it’s not easy to choose. You go to the nearest showroom, bounce up and down, lie down, and roll over. The salesman talks about springs, coils, memory foam, pillow top, adjustable, sleep numbers, and suddenly all the beds feel the same.

Mattresses aren’t cheap, and it’s one of those things you should always buy new. But would you spend $60,000? That’s the price of the Vividus model from Swedish manufacturer Hästens. According to the company’s website, “the world’s most exclusive bed” is built entirely by hand and takes 150-160 hours to make. The frame is constructed from solid pine and is assembled with dovetail jointing without any screws or nails. The mattress is made of layers of horsehair, cotton, linen and wool.

There are Hästens retailers in ten states in the U.S. If you want to give it a test drive, only one hotel in the U.S. has Hästens beds – The Peninsula Chicago. For the price of a night in the Windy City, you can decide whether the investment is worth it. Rack rates at that hotel range from $525 to $7,500 per night, although it’s not clear whether all rooms have the Swedish beds. Sleep well.

Ha-ha-ha...Some years ago I set a goal of getting a new mattress by September that year. I keep finding other priorities and still have the mattress that my brother had to leave behind when he went to Desert Storm. I want to die and go to Swedish mattress heaven.

“the world’s most exclusive bed” ???
Is that code for super wealthy people that translates to:
"you can be assured no one outside your class will ever own this bed"

God forbid middle class people dare to even think about buying this bed!
