The IRS recently announced that they will be upping the profile of their program for people to snitch on tax cheats and get monetary compensation in the process with a new department called the Whistle Blower Office. This new office was established by the Tax Relief and Health Care Act of 2006 and will to process the tips received from individuals who spot businesses that are cheating on their taxes. According to the IRS:
A reward worth between 15 percent and 30 percent of the total proceeds that IRS collects could be awarded, if the IRS moves ahead based on the information provided.
The new Whistle Blowers Office will be responsible for determining whether the tips on tax cheats that are given to the IRS are credible and worth pursuing further. For those tips that are determined to be credible, the office will assign the information to the appropriate IRS office for further investigation.
