RED-FACED bosses at a Hong Kong bank today admitted they had accidentally destroyed 83 safety deposit boxes and their valuable contents in a renovation bungle that could cost millions of dollars.

The boxes - which the bank said likely held cash, heirlooms and jewels - were kept at a branch of DBS Bank in the southern Chinese territory and had been selected for scrapping by mistake, a spokeswoman said.
