Default Wal-Mart $4 Prescription Drugs

Wal-mart has announced that they will begin selling a month's supply of nearly 300 generic drugs for $4 instead of the $10 - $30 that they currently cost. The new pricing is currently being offered at 65 Wal-Mart, Neighborhood Market and Sam’s Club pharmacies in Tampa Bay, Fl to customers and associates. They plan to expand the program Nationwide in 2007.

Here are some of the key aspects of the program:

  • The $4 pricing will be available to anyone with a prescription from a doctor that can be filled with a covered generic medicine.

  • The uninsured will have access to this program.

  • Insurance will also be accepted.

  • The program will initially cover 291 generic medications

  • The generic 291 medications cover many of the most commonly used medications which include those that treat and manage allergies, cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes.

  • In addition, some antibiotics, antidepressants, anti-psychotics and prescription vitamins are also among the 291 designated medications.

I cannot wait for this to come to IL! 2 of my medicines are eligible and at least 1 of DH's is. This will save me 50% over what the mail order cost, without dealing with all of the hassles from the mail order company!

my economics teacher was telling us about this. she was saying how they are doing it so you dont go to like publix or some other grocery store pharmacy...because wal mart expects you to buy more than just pharmaceuticals. i guess it sucks for other pharmacies.

Just thought I'd revive this post on what I'm seeing out there -- the $4 prescription list is now being offered by other chains who have offerings that expanded pretty significantly. I've seen it at Walgreens, Costco, Kroger, and others. A very favorable trend for consumers.
