Governement Proposes Under Inflated Tire Warning System

Federal officials Wednesday proposed requiring automakers to install monitors in each wheel on a car to warn drivers when pressure falls more than 25% in any of the tires.

If finalized, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's plan would require automakers to install the monitors in 50% of their vehicles beginning next Sept. 1, phasing in to 100% by 2007.

"It will be a challenge, but we will do it," says Eron Shosteck, director of communications for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.
